Talking more than I thought
Alright, quick run though of the weekend before I go workout.Tim flew in on Thursday afternoon to stay with us for the weekend. We took him to Multnomah Falls to try to entice him to come back for the Larch Mountain hike (I think it worked!). We drove up the Gorge to look at the fall colors (o! pretty!) and turned on 35 to drive to the mountain. Winding in and out of wine country, we eventually hit the snow line and came around the corner to see a beautiful view of Mt Hood. We pulled over so that Brian and Tim could take some pictures.
At this point, it was past dinner time, so we wound our way down the mountain to the Kennedy School (with Tim protesting the entire way "I miss Mt Hood."). Katie met us there, and we gave Tim the tour (the staff at the Kennedy School rock about showing our out-of-town guests the hotel rooms) before heading to Honors bar to wait for dinner. A fun night! And poor Tim had been up since 4 a.m. so fitting this much in was a little crazy.
We got up later than planned the next day and headed into Seattle, making Tim oh and ah over Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier.
Seattle was lovely and awesome. Brian and I are going to figure out a weekend to go for a more serious wander. Tim had his interview with the school, and met up with us at Ivar's on the pier for drinks. I tried Manny's Pale Ale which is super yummy. On Carrie's friend Heather's suggestion, we walked to Umi's for sushi where we proceeded to have one of the two best sushi meals of my life. Mmmmmmmmmm. Thank you, Carrie and Heather! It was comfortable and attractive, the crowd was diverse and interesting to look at and I'll be back again in a heartbeat.
After a little more wandering, we wandered back to Portland to Doug Fir, where we ran into our next door neighbors (who are very cool people). We ended up hanging out with them and with their friends, and went downstairs to see Black Mountain who were awesome. I got to dance!!! I also drank way too much!!! That not being enough for the day, around 1 a.m. or so, we headed down Burnside to some other bar, which was interesting, but I was done. Done. Even the guy with the monkey on his back and the short shorts was not enough to amuse me or keep me going. Drinks abandoned, we went home.
Saturday, we got up and went to McMinnville, which had been invaded by The Empire. Seriously, there were Storm troopers everywhere and I'm not sure why. It made a good backdrop for the Spruce Goose, and the little kid dressed up as a Jawa made me giggle every time he/she wandered by.
The coast - we went to Lincoln City for wandering, and then to all my favorite haunts on the way to Newport. Tim wanted to see sea lions, and we showed him sea lions. And some lovely blue herons, which I managed to get in a few pictures. I figured Tim would want to see Rogue, where his beer starts out so we went there, and shot some pictures of the bridge, and the sunset (PhotoWalk walks again!). Tim wanted to get a shirt at Rogue, so we wandered into their upstairs. We had a few beers (ugh, still was hung-over) and Tim bought a hoodie and a stocking cap. We could have hung out there all night, but we needed seafood. On our way out, we ended up hanging out with some guys from Colorado who were very cool. We talked about travel and cameras and they tried to convince us to stay for a few more pints, but alas dinner called. O, that, and one of them tried to talk me out of liking Mo's. An argument that he couldn't win, no matter how well he argued his case.
Kyllo's for dinner (getting more and more disappointed each time we go there now, I think we will go to Fathoms next time. Can someone let me know where they like the seafood in Lincoln City? Don't say Blackfish Cafe, we had a bad experience there, and we don't think they are all that). Tim got Sunfish, I had Tialapia, Brian had Hal-Mac. A long drive home, and then crashed into bed.
Sunday, we had grand plans, but they started with breakfast and the restaurant we went to was woefully understaffed. They made valiant efforts, but we were there for close to 2 hours, so that was the morning. Brian and I refused to let Tim go home without seeing Powells, so we raced downtown for 20 minutes so he could see part of it. He walked off after buying three books (maybe it's better we had no more time).
There were a million things we'd have liked to show Tim, but I think he got as much of an overview as we could give in the timeframe he was here. I think one of the funniest things was when we teased that we wanted him to move to Portland and not Seattle and all our Portland acquaintances started in on an extremely firm "Portland is soooo much better than Seattle RAAAAAWWWRRR" talk that surprised even Brian and I. [For the record, Portland is where I want to be. Seattle would be fun, but Portland is where it is.]
O! And we bought Polaroid film, so I got my grandfather's SX-70 from 1974 up and going! I'll scan some in at some point for anyone who may be interested. Or mostly for myself, either way.
